“If my child is the one who needs therapy, why do I need skills training as a parent?”

No child is a broken thing that needs to be fixed.  Sometimes parents think that therapy fixes people, or children, by merely changing behaviors.

Children aren’t problems to be fixed.

Instead, children can feel stuck and often misbehave in ways that parents deem problematic.  But no child wants to feel stuck forever.  And a CCPT therapist builds a relationship that provides freedom and space for the child to make sense of their confusing emotions and life challenges.  Eventually, as a child progresses through CCPT treatment, they gain enough self esteem that often eliminates or greatly reduces the problematic behavior.

“But I’m not sure I really need to learn skills, my parenting is just fine. I just want their behavior to change “.

Parent involvement increases positive results.

CCPT is effective as a standalone treatment for any child with any presenting issue.  However, research shows that when parents are involved in reinforcing CCPT skills at home, the child’s progress is exponentially quicker and longer lasting

An intentional and engaged parent makes all the difference.

Parents will see the investment of time and learning new skills as a gift to their child that will have lasting effects for years to come.

Your child will be changing and growing as a result of play therapy.  You provide an environment at home that preserves those changes and can affect your whole family towards more calm and connected relationships.

It is true that we don’t know what we don’t know, and we often parent the way we were parented.  But once we know something new or different, we can make new choices.

Lasting change comes slowly.

When we see unwanted behaviors in our child, we often want a quick fix.  But realizing that deep and lasting change comes slowly and over time, a parent will be part of the solution by eliminating unhelpful parenting strategies and mastering skills and mindsets that set everyone up for success.

Parents and therapist work best together

  • To address the child’s deepest need
  • To allow them to process their challenging emotions
  • To help the child gain their own sense of self regulation and creative problem-solving

Parent Skills Training is the path that helps parents view their role as calm and connected parents, to discipline their children in healthy, respectful, and kind ways that will lead them closer to a child that becomes an autonomous, responsible adult.
